Welcome to a new feature I’m going to try out, a weekly roundup of what I’ve been reading in the week, and what’s upcoming.
This week I finished The Black Coast by Mike Brooks. I really enjoyed it, and a review will be posted closer to the release date.
I’ve also been reading The Mask of Mirrors by M. A. Carrick. I like it so far, but it’s tricky for me to get completely into it, and ultimately I don’t know if it will ever completely click with me. I care enough to finish it, but that might take a week or so.
Because of my slow progress with that book, I decided to pick up a sequel that I could dive into a bit more easily. For this I chose Raven Stratagem by Yoon Ha Lee. I had a really good time with Ninefox Gambit, with its mix of strong characterisation and exotic calender based technology, and Raven Stratagem has a strong start.
I’m going to be putting my read of Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia on hold at around 30%. The book has interesting themes and characters, but I don’t find myself coming back to it currently. Now that I know what I’m in for, I can pick it up another time when my mood suits the feel of the book.
I’m considering writing up a review for the first two episodes of WandaVision (the new Marvel series on Disney+) – if I do that’ll be up in the next couple of days.
Since it may be a while till I finish a book, I’m going to try and get a top anticipated books of this year list out some point in the next week. There might be some surprises!
I really loved Mask of Mirrors. I also really need to read The Black Coast. I’ve heard such good things.
