This week I’ve posted a single review! (Boo) But it’s for the best book I’ve read so far this year! (Hooray) It’s been a bit of a strange week for me, click ahead to see what I’ve been up to
Early this week I posted my review for Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover. It was a great book, and I’m keen to read more of the series later this year. Find my review here.
So, for the two books I started last week… I’m about halfway through The Unbroken, and have made no more progress on The Calculating Stars. The curse of being a mood reader. I do hope to get back to both of them soonish, but I’m not sure yet whether I will. I have genuinely been enjoying reading both (although the characters in The Unbroken are hot messes who can be painful to read at times) so there’s no way I won’t get back to them eventually.
It took me a little while to click on what I wanted to read this week. I started a new Litrpg – Mastermind by Steven Kelliher, but I wanted something meatier to sink my teeth into. I also started Shadowblack by Sebastian de Castell (Book 2 in the Spellslinger series) but I wasn’t quite in the mood for that either. After sampling several other books, I eventually settled on a book I started and set aside practically a year ago.
That book was Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and I read it over the course of a couple of days. I had a really good time with it, and plan to have a review out either tomorrow or Monday. I also went back and finished Shadowblack. It was fun enough, but I didn’t like it as much as the first book, and I don’t think I’ll do a full review for it – depending on how much I have to say, it might get it’s own review this upcoming week, or get combined with another short review at a later date.
I’ve started reading The Blood Tartan by Raymond St. Elmo. He has a very distinct style, and has managed to hook me in pretty fast. Also in my fit of indecision, I read a couple of short stories in The Hidden Girl and Other Stories by Ken Liu. Short story collections take me a while to read, as I tend to dot the stories in here and there between books.
And now, my TBR shortlist! From last week’s shortlist, I picked up The Blood Tartan and Shadowblack, meaning I’ve managed to pick up at least a book a week from my TBR shortlist since I started this feature!

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two. This week I’ve shuffled my TBR around a lot, but that may just be a sign that I’m not sure what to read next.
Let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!
