This week I’ve finished four books and posted one review (now that’s a worrying ratio)! It’s been a good week for reading, and I feel energised for my reading week ahead. Read on to get a roundup for the week and find out what I’m reading!
On Sunday I finished reading Clay’s Ark by Octavia Butler, and I was not a fan. If Octavia Butler was less talented at writing prose that draws me in, I likely wouldn’t have finished it. I’ve already written a very short review for it, but I might wait until I have another short review to bundle it up with before releasing.
I also finished The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne, and it was really good! Lots of action, lots of magical creatures, strange powers, ancient artefacts, really just a story bursting with character. The review for this will come closer to the May 6th release date.
And just before writing this post, I finished The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart, a fun and mystery filled epic fantasy, and an impressive debut novel. I hope to get a review for that done in the next couple of weeks.
As well as my regular reading, I finished reading Extraordinary Insects to my son, an excellent non-fiction book packed with fascinating facts about insects (I read the chapter on insect sex by myself separately!). I won’t be reviewing it, but it’s well worth a look if you like learning new things.
On my regular Thursday review, I put up a review for Last Memoria by Rachel Emma Shaw. It was good, but didn’t push as many of my buttons as I would have liked. You can find that review here.
Next week I’ll be posting my review for A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine, and it’s the end of the month, so I’ll also be posting my regular Monthly Reading Retrospective, where I look at what I’ve read in the month, and how well I’m doing with respect to my reading goals for the year.
And now, my TBR shortlist! From last week’s shortlist, I’ve picked up The Bone Shard Daughter, another week of picking a top row book.

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two. The coverless book on the bottom row is Brother Red by Adrian Selby. Since I’ve just finished a book, I’m pretty sure I’ll be picking up The Shadow Saint shortly. After that, who knows? I do seem to be more in the mood for pacey, recent epic fantasy currently, but as regular readers of the blog might know, my mood changes on a dime.
As usual, let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!
