Weekly Roundup

This week’s been a less than typical one for my reading. I finished a book that I said I probably wasn’t going to, then ended up completely reading the next book in the trilogy! Apart from that I started one new book, and managed to get out three blog posts. Read on to find out the details!

This Week’s Reading:

On Sunday I finished Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. I didn’t think I would, because I wasn’t feeling great, but apparently I couldn’t stay away. The very same day I started Assassin’s Quest, the final book in the trilogy, and ended up finishing it on Thursday. My feelings on both books are complicated, though mostly positive. I thought I was going to barrel through the Realm of the Elderlings series, but the cut off point between each trilogy are severe enough that I think it’ll be at least a month or two before I look at the next trilogy. That might open my time up for some other big epic fantasy tomes I’m eager to try. I’ll try and get some short reviews of those two books out soon.

I started a translated short story collection – I’m Waiting For You and Other Stories by Kim Bo-Young this week. It’s interesting in that it’s two sets of two longer stories, where the stories within a set share the same world. I’m only partway through the second story, but so far I’m liking it, but not loving it.

I’ve not read much of Priest of Lies this week (a book I started last week) but I hope to get into it more next week.

This Week’s Posts:

Monday: Book Bingo Journey – Row 2 Thoughts & Plans – The second part in my five part series running through the five rows in r/fantasy’s Book Bingo

Wednesday: Mini Review: Bloodline – A pretty brief review of Bloodline by Will Wight. There’s not a whole lot for me to say this deep into a series, but it was a good entry.

Thursday: Book Review: The Girl and the Stars – My main review for the week, The Girl and the Stars was a little disappointing, but an entertaining read overall, and I plan to continue with the series

Next Week’s Posts:

Next week I’ll be posting my look at the third row in r/fantasy Book Bingo, along with a review of Piranese. I hope to finish my review of Children of Ruin, but if I don’t, I should manage to post a double bill review of Royal Assassin and Assassin’s Quest instead.

Next Week’s TBR Shortlist:

From last week’s shortlist, I’ve picked up nothing, ending my five week streak of picking a top row TBR book, and my seven week streak of picking a book from my TRB shortlist. It was good while it lasted, but I’m mostly just surprised I was able to pick books I was actually likely to pick up those weeks.

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two. The blank cover in the top right is The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman.

As usual, let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!

I really enjoyed it! The prologue and first chapter didn’t fill me with a lot of hope, but the whole pilot school arc which fills the majority of the book is great, and goes in a lot of unexpected directions. Most of the other trainee pilots feel three dimensional, and the space combat is fun to read. Honestly I think it’s some of Sanderson’s best work.
