Weekly Roundup

It’s been a very mixed reading week. I DNFed a book I was really hoping to like, but started two more books with strong openings. I also got up a long delayed review and a relatively new one. Read on to find out more!

This Week’s Reading:

So, first with the DNF. Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. I really tried, but 350 pages and just less than half way in, and I was still forcing myself to pick it up and focus on it. It’s hard to say exactly why it didn’t work for me – I didn’t dislike it, but it was getting such a struggle to get through it that I just had to throw in the towel. I don’t think I’ll be doing a review of Tigana on here. Maybe I’ll come back to it some day, but for now I have plenty of other books to read.

After that (on Thursday) I started reading First Sister by Linden A. Lewis, which is a sort of space opera by way of A Handmaid’s Tale. So far I’m finding it an entertaining read, and I hope it continues to be as good throughout.

I also started She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan yesterday. The opening is really atmospheric, and I’m so interested to see where it goes from there. Both books I’m reading at the moment are really going to have to duke it out against each other for my attention!

I did manage to finish an SPFBO book, but I’ll not be talking about that here until I’ve reviewed it on The Fantasy Inn properly.

Tuesday: Quick Book Review: Priest of Gallows – Another great entry in the War for the Rose Throne series, I can’t wait to read the final novel when it comes out.

Thursday: Novella Reviews: The Expert System’s Brother & How To Be Dead– Two solid novellas worth looking at, after several weeks I finally found space to get these reviews out into the world.

I’ll probably be posting my rave review of The Space Between Worlds on Tuesday. Please check it out, as I don’t think the book has reached as wide an audience as it deserves! After that will likely either be a review of Bear Head or Defekt, depending on which one I finish first.

Next Week’s TBR Shortlist (Not including SPFBO books):

Now I’m on a seven week streak of picking top row TBR books. It’s all part of my plan though, as this month I have a pretty rigid list of what I’m reading so that I can make sure I read both my arcs and SPFBO books, while still ideally meeting my personal reading goals. From last week’s TBR shortlist I picked up She Who Became The Sun and The First Sister.
