Weekly Roundup

As predicted, another slow week for reading, but the good news is that I should be much more free to read from now on!

This Week’s Posts:

Thursday: Book Review: Empire in Black and Gold

This Week’s Reading:

I’ve continued reading Blood of the Mantis by Adrian Tchaikovsky, the third book in the Shadows of the Apt series. It definitely feels like things have slowed down in this entry, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

I’ve also dipped back into The Outside by Ada Hoffman.

The Slow Read Through The Big Book Of Modern Fantasy

In which I read and review at least one short story a week from The Big Book of Modern Fantasy, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer.

Nothing this week again! I’ll try and get back on this soon.

Movie/TV Thoughts:

The Eternals (cinema): Despite its mixed reviews, I quite enjoyed this movie. There’s a sense of scale and history to it, and I think the characters had a lot of subtle touches to them that I appreciated. The visuals are spectacular, barring a few rubbery cgi fight scenes. I especially appreciated that the story moved very differently to a typical marvel movie, making choices that I found to be quite bold. Was it perfect? No, but unlike some movies, it’s stuck with me several days after watching it, and I want to see more from these characters. Lauren Ridloff’s Makarri, Angelina Jolie’s Thena and Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos were particular highlights for me. Unless you’re fairly picky, I think this is a movie worth judging for yourself. I did, and had a great time.

Next Week’s Posts:

I don’t have a review lined up for next week. If I have time, I will write a review for Dragonfly Falling by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I’d prefer not to go a week without content, but I’ve run out of my backlog, and I haven’t had much time to write in!

Next Week’s TBR Shortlist (Not including SPFBO books):

This week I didn’t pick up any books at all.

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two (although you’ll quickly find they are the same!). The book in the bottom row with a blank cover is an arc of The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart. Again, I doubt I’ll get to any of these next week, but hopefully I’ll have started getting through some books by the week after.

As usual, let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!
