Weekly Roundup

This week I’ve finished two books, written one review, and read one story from The Big Book of Modern Fantasy. Read on to find out more!

This Week’s Posts:

Thursday: Book Review: Blood of the Mantis

This Week’s Reading:

This week I finished reading Salute the Dark by Adrian Tchaikovsky, the fourth book in the Shadows of the Apt series. A great conclusion to the first major series arc, with a lot of changes. I’ve also finished reading Spoils of War, the first short story collection in the same world. It concluded with two particularly strong stories, and is altogether a solid set of tales.

I read a bit more of Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts, although I’ve stalled on it a bit. I might put more time into it once I’ve read the first SPFBO finalist, or I might save it for when I’m more in the mood for that sort of epic fantasy.

And finally I’ve almost finished my first SPFBO finalist, which I will potentially reveal in my month end post – although with no further details other than I’ve read it.

The Slow Read Through The Big Book Of Modern Fantasy

In which I read and review at least one short story a week from The Big Book of Modern Fantasy, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer.

Narrow Valley by R. A. Lafferty: A downright charming tale about a native American protecting his land with a dubious curse, and the white family who come to claim it many years later. Clever, witty and incredibly economical in its character building. 4.5/5

Movie/TV Thoughts:

Nothing this week – next week, Ghostbusters (probably)

Next Week’s Posts:

Next week the plan is to get my The Outside review written up. If not that, then Salute the Dark, or possibly Spoils of War.

Next Week’s TBR Shortlist (Not including SPFBO books):

Again, nothing picked up from my backlog this week.

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two (although you’ll quickly find they are the same!). The book in the third row with a blank cover is an arc of The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart.

As usual, let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!
