This week I’ve finished two books, started three more and sort of read one story from The Big Book of Modern Fantasy. I’ve also finally posted two reviews in a week after a long period of only posting one. I’ve decided to remove the Movie/TV thoughts section from the Weekly Roundup, as my heart wasn’t really in it. Read on to find out more!
This Week’s Posts:
Tuesday: Collection Review: Spoils of War
Thursday: Book Review: The Old Drift
This Week’s Reading:
This week I finished Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, a pretty enjoyable story about an expendable who survives when he shouldn’t and has to deal with the fact that there’s two of him running about when there really shouldn’t be. It’s one of those books that’s consistently good throughout, and is a neat little sci-fi package that would suit fans of Adrian Tchaikovsky.
Then I finished reading Sistersong by Lucy Holland. This story of three siblings discovering themselves, magic, love and loss in post-Roman Britain really grew on me, taking some turns I didn’t expect, and delivering some strong emotional beats.
I started reading The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart, sequel to last year’s Bone Shard Daughter. So far it seems a solid continuation to the previous book, although at the very early stages there’s no clear threat yet.
I also continued reading The Sea Watch by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which is taking some interesting turns, expanding the world in a way that feels a little bit like a detour from the overarching plot, but will likely have big repercussions going forward. It’s the most focused of all of the Shadows of the Apt books so far, with only one main character from the series featuring.
And I made a small start to Semiosis by Sue Burke, a sci-fi about colonists settling on a planet with deceptively dangerous flora.
The Slow Read Through The Big Book Of Modern Fantasy
In which I read and review at least one short story a week from The Big Book of Modern Fantasy, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer.
The Prey by Bilge Karasu: I couldn’t bring myself to finish this trippy and hyperactive story about a man whose arm is being swallowed by a fish.
Next Week’s Posts:
I have a lot of half finished reviews on the go, so it’s a bit of a toss up as to what will actually get done in time! I’ll probably post my top ten books of the year (that I’ve read) on Tuesday too.
Next Week’s TBR Shortlist (Not including SPFBO books):
This week I picked The Bone Shard Emperor from the top row of my TBR shortlist.

Here’s a link to my last Weekly Roundup, if you wish to compare the two. The book in the bottom row with a blank cover is A Man of Shadows by Jeff Noon.
As usual, let me know if there’s anything there you’d recommend!
